Ducks in Trees

Filed under: Winter, birds — Tags: — mothernaturesgarden @ 10:39 am

What to my wondering eyes ….ducks in trees. Although not the best of photos, it is easily determined these are wood ducks. I love living here. Every year there is something new and exciting to learn.

Male Wood Duck

Amazed to see a pair of Wood Ducks in the woods behind our house, I started searching for information to find that they do indeed nest in the hollow of trees such as a Pileated Woodpecker might carve and near water. We have Beaver Dam Creek nearby.

A quick Google search rendered a beautiful post on Larry Jordan’s blog, The Birder’s Report, made about this time last year. As you can see, the Steve Berliner photos are exquisite.

A YouTube search, and you can see little ducklings plummeting to the ground. According to the Cornell site, they can jump from a height of 290′ (has to be a mistake) without injury.  Deep nesting boxes prevent predation by raccoons.

I hope the Wood Ducks find a good site and remain.

Cedar Bluebird Boxes

Filed under: Uncategorized — mothernaturesgarden @ 8:00 am

img_56171Nashville has a large flea market at the fairgrounds every fourth weekend of the month. I found these hinged, cedar, bluebird boxes that are so aromatic they will probably repel bothersome insects.

I’m always on the lookout for containers like this one. Bundle of lucky bamboo will be enough for some in the aquarium.

img_5621Twelve crystal chandelier pendants are presently hanging from curtains but I will add to my collection that I use for Christmas tree icicle decorations. I just wanted to look at them for a while. I’m having buyers regret that I did not pick up a few fresh African violets from the lady with Optimara violets who is always there. Oh well, next time. Did you know Optimara violets come from Nashville?

The weather has been so nice for the last couple of days, I repotted an andromeda that stays in bud for several months into a larger container. It is a desirable  contrast to the bare woods behind.
